Hamburg, gateway to the world

Hamburg is more than 800 years old and has a long tradition of neutrality and liberalism.

Situated on the Elbe and Alster rivers, this green city contains the third biggest container port in Europe, and, as the ‘Gateway to the World’, is home to around 100 consulates.

Over 20,000 Hamburg businesses have operations abroad and around 3,500 subsidiaries of foreign companies operate in the city. Hamburg is one of the largest centres for the aviation industry in the world.

Its sister cities include, among others, Chicago, Dar es Salaam, Dresden, Leon, Marseilles, Osaka, Prague, Shanghai and St. Petersburg.
